This desk was practically shouting “take me home!” when I spotted it at my local Goodwill. My workshop was pretty much bursting at the seams with projects at the time, so I really did not have the space for it, but I simply could not resist this one. I immediately noticed the great drawer pulls and clean lines. Upon further inspection, the desk proved to be solidly constructed and in need of only cosmetic repairs. I knew this one would be beautiful.
Sometimes when I find a new piece it takes me awhile to formulate a design plan. Other times, I can immediately envision what I want to do – which was the case with this desk – it was going to be dark navy with brass pulls. Here is the “almost” before photo (I had actually started some repairs on the drawers when I took the photo).
The drawer pulls were extremely tarnished and I wasn’t even sure what type of metal they were. I was hoping there was brass under all the crud. I planned to keep the natural brass if possible, or spray them if not. I removed the pulls and started scrubbing. And there it was, that first little glimmer of gold that started to shine through (angels singing). I got out the Brasso, and about 45 minutes and a lot of elbow grease later, I had restored the beautiful brass pulls.
The desk needed some minor cosmetic repairs to the drawers and sides. I used Bondo on this one and it turned out beautifully. I then sanded the entire desk and primed (just the top) for a smooth finish. I chose to use General Finishes milk paint in Coastal Blue because 1) I love to use this brand of paint – it goes on evenly and creates a gorgeous finish, and 2) the deep navy color of Coastal Blue is exactly the look I was going for. It’s an almost black navy that I think is very sophisticated.
I also decided to dip the legs in gold for a little added style and to coordinate with the pulls. I simply taped off the legs with my blue tape and then used Krylon spray paint in gold leaf on the legs. So easy, so simple, and so beautiful.
Finally, I sealed the entire piece with General Finishes high performance top coat in a satin. It created a lovely finish that really enhanced the color of the piece.
I’m so happy I didn’t pass on this desk. Sometimes when a piece of furniture speaks to you, it pays to listen.
Have a wonderful day!

The desk turned out great! I also love GF milk paint. I have 6 or 7 of their colors (Patina is soooo pretty!) I saw the Coastal Blue but wasn’t sure how it would look. Thanks for showing me!
