This vintage 5 drawer dresser was my most recent Craigslist find. Even with the blurry Craigslist photo, I could see beautiful curve of the serpentine top drawer. I knew I had to have it. Here’s the before photo in my workshop.
The finish was in fairly good shape, and I actually hesitated to paint it. . . for about a minute. Come on, painting furniture is what I love to do, so of course I was going to paint it!
I decided I wanted to go with a blue with gray tones. I created a custom mix using General Finishes milk paint. I used approximately 2 parts Coastal Blue, 2 parts Snow White, and 1 part Lamp Black. These portions are really approximations – I just mixed until I had achieved the blue gray color I was going for. The closest Benjamin Moore color is Van Deusen blue. I was able to obtain good coverage with 2 coats and then I sealed the entire piece with 2 coats of General Finishes High performance top coat in satin.
The original pulls were in poor condition and the back plates were mismatched, so they had to be replaced. I found the new bail pulls on D. Lawless Hardware – what is becoming my “go to” source for hardware. They were only 75 cents per pull (yes, 75 cents – that is not a typo). I was a bit skeptical that they might not be great quality when I ordered them because they were so inexpensive. I was very pleasantly surprised when they arrived. They are really lovely.
Thanks for reading my blog.

But wait… there’s more! When you visit D. Lawless, do you see some of the ornate drawer pulls and think it reminds you of the old leather barrettes with the wooden poker like this?

I am imagining some of those pulls bent and turned into hair ornaments. lol Gorgeous!

Hi Frannie – Thank you! I did sand before painting and then also light sanding between coats of paint.
