Hello friends!
Here’s a short post to show you my latest project. I finally found a pair of night stands – I seem to only find single ones – and thought they would be a quick project. Boy was I wrong. Before I tell you about that, here is how they turned out.
I forgot to take a before photo, but here is one I found on line that is exactly like mine. (Sorry I don’t know the original source).
My initial plan was to paint the night stands a fun green color called Grasshopper Green from Sherwin Williams. When I went to pick up the paint, I was informed by the sales associate that I could not get this color in the ProClassic paint because of the tint base needed. He recommended their latex all surface enamel instead, so I decided to give it a try.
After my usual prep of sanding and priming, I began painting with the SW paint. I found this paint very difficult to use for a number of reasons. First, it did not level well (I even had a leveler added to the paint) and left significant brush strokes. I tried to sand between coats to get a smooth finish, but it really did not sand well. Rather than sanding to a nice dust, it was really crumbly. Also, the finish just did not have a nice smooth feel. Even with rigorous sanding, it felt tacky. Finally, the coverage was poor. After 3 coats, it still did not look good. At this point in the project, I was ready to just put the night stands out at the curb with a “free” sign.
Rather than give up, I gave the night stands a time out. More accurately, I gave myself a time out and waited a couple of days for my frustration to subside. I decided to count my losses on the SW paint and just start over. I sanded the night stands to a smooth finish and painted them with my favorite paint – General Finishes.
The color is called Persian Blue and I think it suits these night stands perfectly. It is a soft blue gray with maybe a hint of green. As usual, I was not let down by this paint. Two coats and it looked great. I sealed the night stands with General Finishes high performance topcoat in flat and added new white glass knobs from Hobby Lobby. Boom, done.
I would love to know what you think.

Ah GF paints, how I love thee, let me count the ways…
But truly, that’s a shame about your first painting attempt, and I’m so glad you tried again because they came out looking awesome! 🙂

Your pieces are lovely!! Can I ask what method you use to paint your furniture? Foam roller, brush or spray? I’m still new at this and would love some tips!
