This is my second time restyling this particular mid century desk. I painted the first one in General Finishes Coastal Blue a few months back. You can see it here. I loved how it looked in navy, but I wanted to do something a bit different this time. I decided on kelly green.
After finding the desk, I came upon the chair while shopping at the Goodwill. Single chairs are easy to find – sets of chairs are much more coveted. I think a great use for a lone chair is to pair it with a desk like this. I loved the back on this chair and it reminds me of bow ties. I thought this particular mid century chair would look great with this desk, so I grabbed it.
Here are the before shots of the desk and the chair.
Both of these pieces were in great shape, they just needed a makeover. I primed and painted the desk with Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Clover Green. It took about 4 coats to get good coverage. If you are familiar with BM Advance paint, you know that the waiting time between coats is 16 hours. It took several days of painting on the desk!
I used the original hardware and shined it up with Brasso. I am absolutely drooling over the hardware on this desk. Gorgeous.
I primed and painted the chair with Valspar spray paint in white lacquer. I used this paint on my own dining chairs and it has held up so well. I have two young kids who are pretty rough on furniture, and the paint still looks great after a couple of years of daily use.
I picked up a half yard of fabric at Hobby Lobby and recovered the seat. I love the deep coral and white fabric with the kelly green desk. I also like the modern feel of the large print with the mid century chair.
See how the bow ties on the chair make a peek-a-boo view of the hardware? Perfect.
Spring is here in Seattle and the tulips are blooming. I am loving the coral and green in the tulips and this mid century desk and chair!
Happy Spring to you!

Gorgeous work. The colours work perfectly together. I love the fabric you used to cover the chair, just stunning. Looking forward to seeing your next project.

So lovely! Years ago, I fell in love with a bright, kelly green office scene in the now defunct “Blueprint” magazine by Martha Stewart. It’s such a great color in an office or work space– strong, yet feminine, calming but full of energy, and happy looking! Love it with the bright white chair, too. You brought these pieces from frumpy to (really) fabulous!

Love this too! You’re work is so inspiring.

The desk turned out gorgeous! That original hardware is awesome and pairs so well with the green. I’m so glad you mentioned the paint you used on the chairs. I have 6 very similar ones and have been on the fence about painting them since I worried about how it would hold up to two young boys. The Valspar spray paint sounds like a great option!

Gorgeous! I am a fellow designer in Toronto, Canada and just looking for inspiration for decorating my new office.
You have a great eye Susan! Question, what colour is the soft blue on the wall behind the desk?
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Linda! The wall color is Benjamin Moore “Pale Smoke.” It’s a great soft blue with lots of gray undertones. Susan
