This dresser was another amazing Craigslist find. I was killing time waiting for my kids to get out of school and as I sometimes (okay always) do, I browsed Craigslist. I saw this dresser listed for free, yes free. Here’s the ad.
Needless to say, we hightailed it on over and grabbed this baby up. Just as the ad said, the dresser was in great shape, and the back panel was missing (more on that below), but what the ad didn’t mention is that this dresser was made by Dixie! Woohoo!
This piece was in great shape. The drawers were in near perfect condition. I cleaned it up and then headed over to Lowe’s for a panel for the back. I had to purchase a ginormous piece of 1/4 inch panel, but the nice guys at Lowe’s gladly cut it to size for me with their huge saw. It fit perfectly on the back and I stapled it into place. This was such an easy fix. If you ever run across a dresser with a missing back, don’t fret. It is really a very simple problem to remedy.
Now, onto the pretty stuff. I lightly sanded the entire piece and then mixed up my paint. I decided this French Provincial beauty needed a French Blue paint. My friend Christina from Phoenix Restoration had given me a sample of General Finishes Halcyon Blue that she no longer needed. This color is a fairly light and bright blue, so I needed to gray it down a bit for this piece. I mixed about 1 part Halcyon Blue with 2 parts Seagull Gray. After the first coat dried, it was still a bit too blue, so I added more Seagull Gray and a pinch of some slate gray oops paint I had on hand. Ah yes, the perfect French Blue achieved.
All of the original hardware was still with this piece – another plus. I removed it, cleaned it up and then replaced it. Easy peasy.
I like the aged brass finish on the hardware in contrast to the light gray blue paint. This piece also has some really pretty carved details on the legs and a gentle curved to the front. Ooh la la, so French.
The dried lavender bouquets are from my garden from last summer. I adore lavender for so many reasons and have a ton of it. French lavender, French Provincial, and French Blue. Perfect.
Bonsoir mes amis.

You do amazing work! I love GF paint. This piece has such a nice sheen. Did you put a finish over the paint?

This is a knock out! Looking at the leg pic it looks like some of the ornate parts had some darker crevices. Is that due to the previous color you painted it? It almost looks like you did some glazing. Do you ever use glaze or wax? I saw you used GF Flat clear coat. Is there flat not a true flat because I saw some shiny spots. Not to say that is a bad thing, or did you buff it out with something? Thanks
