Have you ever been stalked by a piece of furniture on line? You know, you click on a a piece of furniture you see on a website and then it continually shows up on your Facebook newsfeed and in ads on other sites? Funny (scary?) how that happens. Well that is exactly what happened with this dresser I spotted on One Kings Lane. I clicked on it once – just once – and it stalked me for weeks! Here it is.
I really loved the coral and the brass hardware. I decided it must be some sort of sign, and so it became the inspiration for my latest makeover.
Here is my interpretation.
I found this Thomasville dresser at the Goodwill a few weeks ago. it was in great structural condition, made of solid wood, and the the beautiful hardware was intact (bonus!). The top had some pretty deep scratches, but otherwise the finish wasn’t too bad. It was just brown. And blah.
I sanded the top down to bare wood. I sanded the rest just enough to take off the shine. I primed the entire piece and then painted it with three coats of Sherwin Williams ProClassic in Gladiola. I originally picked a coral color that was a few shades lighter called Ardent Coral. You can see it here on the swatch.
Ardent coral is pretty, but it just wasn’t deep enough for the look I wanted. I took the paint back to Sherwin Williams and they were able to retint it for me. Go big or go home, right? Gladiola definitely makes a statement!
I shined up the hardware using Brasso and BarKeeper’s Friend. I have to admit, cleaning hardware is my least favorite part of furniture restoration. But, wow, does it make a big difference.
The ProClassic paint went on like a dream. I brushed the detail areas and rolled the flat parts, lightly sanding between coats. The finish is so smooth with almost no brush strokes.
Such pretty details on this piece. I love the carved flowers on the corners and how they coordinate with the flower-shaped hardware.
This Gladiola beauty is definitely not a wall flower anymore.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Wow!! I love that! It looks better than One Kings Lane dresser and I’ll bet theirs was much, much more expensive. You do great work, are you going to keep it? Did you use a foam roller when you painted this piece? The finish looks smooth as glass.

LOVE LOVE this! What sheen did you use for the paint? Did you seal is with wax?
mshandler says
Hi Ashley! I used semi gloss, but no wax. ProClassic creates a really nice finish.

Your dresser is so much better than the OKL one. It has more style and the hardware is so much better, too. It’s probably even more reasonably priced. A win all around.
mshandler says
Thank you Jane! The OKL dresser is priced at $999 and it is much smaller than mine. I am asking only $395 – a bargain!!

So beautiful! I am obsessed with coral, and just love this. Thanks for tips about your technique– I was wondering how you got the paint SO smooth! 🙂

Beautiful! So much better than the inspiration piece. And I have always loved working with ProClassic – glad you had good results with that product.

I prefer your version, as well. You should submit your piece to the blog “Knock Off Décor” … I’m sure she’d be thrilled to include your AWE-SOME dresser! Take care!
mshandler says
Thank you Cynthia! Great idea about submitting this one to Knock Off Decor. I will do that!

I love that colour! Just such a beautiful piece.

Love the color! What a great find 🙂 That’s so funny you mention that these ads “stalk you” because I get the same thing happen to me!
Your color is much better though!

unanimous! I LOVE yours and don;t even LIKE the 1KL! looks to be a 60’s piece. I have a couple from my family… wish you showed a before! That color will work in nearly any kind of room as a wonderful accent!
mshandler says
Thank you Barbara! I wish I had a “before” photo – somehow I forgot to take one.
Marta says
Beautiful! Question, do you use a foam roller or a roller with a nap to it?
mshandler says
Thank you Marta! I used a foam roller for this one and got a really smooth finish with the ProClassic. Thinking about trying a mohair roller – I have heard that gives a really nice finish, too.

I am very impressed with your work! Every time I have used a roller It always lays down bubbles. I roll in the same direction and it still does it. Did that happen with you? If so I assume the paint just leveled out on its own and all the bubbles popped. Did you use a conditioner or thinner in the paint and top coat? How did you apply the paint on the drawers? I assume a paint brush. I am just amazed you achieved such smooth finish without spraying. I would like to hear how you apply your clear coat as well. Thanks

Hi Shelly! Thank you so much. I used a foam roller on the flat areas and brush on the rest. With the SW ProClassic I am able to achieve a smooth finish. It does level really well.

Hi, Susan! Would you believe I have this exact Thomasville furniture set? I was looking for ideas on how to refurbish, and came across your blog. Beautiful job! I have the mirror that originally went with this dresser, too… Now I know the set will be cute painted. 🙂

That is great! That dresser was so well made, you are lucky to have the set! I would love to know what color you plan to paint it. It would look great in so many colors.
