I picked up this little vintage dresser last week from Craigslist. As soon as I saw it, I emailed the seller because I knew it be taken in a flash. I mean just check out those curves. They’re irresistible. I dropped everything and drove right over to pick it up. As I was loading it into the back of my van, the nice woman who sold it to me apologized for the dust on the bottom of the dresser. Just dust? Believe me, I can handle a little dust.
It didn’t have its original casters, but as luck would have it, I had just picked up a 4 pack from Woodcraft. They sell wooden wheel casters that fit perfectly on these vintage dressers. Before I even pulled this guy out of my van, I popped the casters on and wheeled it in.
Here it is now in all its glory.
The wood on this dresser was in good shape. If I’m being honest, oak isn’t my favorite, but this was really pretty. So, I decided to go for a two tone look to highlight the wood. There wasn’t much finish left on this piece, so a light sanding was all that was needed. I then applied two coats of General Finishes java gel stain to the top and drawers. One coat just wasn’t quite dark enough.
For the rest, I mixed up a custom white paint using a 50/50 mix of General Finishes antique white and snow white. After the first coat, it seemed like I was getting a little yellow bleed through, so I applied a thin coat of shellac. I applied three more coats of paint, sanding lightly between coats for an ultra smooth finish.
I sealed the top with General Finishes HP topcoat in satin and the rest in flat.
I lined all the drawers with aqua chevron shelf liner.
I had originally planned on using glass knobs that I ordered from D. Lawless, which I have used before and love, but they had not yet arrived. Just for kicks (and because I have zero patience), I pulled these turquoise rose knobs out of my stash and put them on. What do you know, I was really liking how they looked with the wood drawers. They add a fun little pop of color to an otherwise very neutral dresser.
The great thing about knobs is they are so easy to switch out for an entirely new look.
So, what do you think? Should I keep the turquoise rose knobs?
Thanks for stopping by.

I am soooo jealous. I have been looking for a smaller empire dresser to “repurpose.” I have found HUGE ones but never one this size. And I love what you did with it! Beautiful! I am a sucker for wood/paint finishes. Always my favorite!

Hi Natalie! I picked up the knobs at HomeGoods. Their inventory is constantly changing, and I have never seen them there since.
