After refinishing several cottage style pieces, I was ready to switch gears. This fabulous Thomasville dresser had been in my shop for several months and I was ready to create something with a clean, fresh and modern look. I have refinished several Thomasville pieces in the past and found them to be so well made. This piece was no exception. It is solid as a rock and in great shape. It only needed a cosmetic makeover.
Here it is as I found it at the Goodwill.
I knew right away when I saw this piece that it would be awesome. Bonus – all the hardware was intact!
I stared by removing all the hardware. I gently pried off the corner pieces being sure not to damage the wood or the delicate nails. They actually slipped off quite easily. I used Brasso to polish and remove the tarnish from the brass.
I sanded the entire piece and primed it with two coats of Zinsser Cover Stain. I let it dry overnight and lightly sanded it. I applied 3 coats of Sherwin Williams ProClassic semigloss paint in “Gallery White.” It is a bright white, but not too stark. Just a nice hint of warmness.
I used a roller to apply the paint to the flat areas – which is most of the dresser – and brushed the paint onto the rest. I sanded between coats for a smooth finish. To give extra durability, I applied two coats of General Finishes High Performance topcoat to the top.
I am in love with the hardware on this piece. So beautiful.
This is such a versatile piece, too. It would be great as a dresser, but also as a media console or in a dining room as a buffet.
The white and brass feel so modern and fresh.
I really want to keep this piece. . . but have decided I need to let it go.

Wow, great find and gorgeous transformation!
So beautiful!
PERFECT ! The hardware is awesome.
Thank you Cherie!
So beautiful, Susan! The original hardware is stunning. Do you have a favorite paint roller that gives you a smooth finish? I have tried a variety of rollers with ProClassic and always have an ever-so-slight stipple effect, which I don’t really mind, but isn’t quite as smooth as I’d like. Always looking for one that will give as close to a sprayed finish as possible! Do you ever add an extender like Floetrol?
I want to know the answers to these questions as well.
Oh yes, that elusive quest for the perfectly smooth finish – I am on it as well. I normally use a foam roller, but for this piece I tried a couple of different rollers – mohair and microfiber. I found the mohair hard to use – I didn’t like the way it laid down the paint. I liked the microfiber roller, but still did give a very slight texture. I do use Floetrol when I use BM Advance and it really helps give that smooth finish with very minimal texture. I also use the SW extender with ProClassic – they add it for me and mix it in where I buy my paint (I think it’s the SW brand extender). I haven’t been able to get the ProClassic as smooth as Advance, but I’m working on it!
Susan – what a great dresser remake! Its really cute! The hardware is the perfect blend of modern and vintage! A great find! Thank you so much for taking the time to link up with us at Dream. Create. Inspire. Link! I hope to see you there again tomorrow!
