Hello!
Just a quick post tonight to share the before and after photos of a great vintage chest I just finished. This piece was in good condition and I fell in love with the pretty ball feet and carved detail. Here’s the Craigslist photo.
I loved everything about this piece, except those batwing pulls. That is my least favorite style of hardware (sorry to those who like them) and they had to go. I had purchased some fun black and white knobs a while back and decided they would look great on this piece. Once again, I went with my go to paint -General Finishes – and my favorite and most used color Lamp Black.
I sanded, painted two coats, and then sealed the entire piece with 2 coats (3 on top) of General Finishes High Performance topcoat in flat. It’s interesting that the flat finish really is not flat. In fact, it actually has quite a bit of sheen.
I really like the scale of the large knobs on this piece. And the carved detail on the side is lovely.
Oh, those fabulous knobs. . .
I lined the drawers with a mod polka dot contact paper. The drawers are in good condition, but it just adds that finishing touch.
This beauty is for sale. It measures 30W x 18D x 44H. Please inquire if you are interested.

What a beautiful re-do! I love the knobs you selected. They work perfectly with this piece.

It is a pretty piece, and definitely looks so fresh and updated in black and with those gorgeous knobs! I, also call those old time pulls “bat wing”! I think I first read that term from Suzanne at The Painted Drawer….but I know they must have a more official name. Maybe one of these days I’ll do some research to find out the correct term…but for now, Bat Wings Must Go!

Hi Robin! That is so funny – I actually picked up the term “batwings” from you! It just fits them so well.
