It’s been a few years, ten to be exact, since I had a baby, and things have definitely changed. When I had my kids, I bought a traditional changing table for the nursery that they quickly outgrew. I suppose I could have repurposed it in some way, but with two babies 18 months apart, I hardly had the time. A much better option would have been to use a lowboy dresser. It’s a far more versatile piece of furniture that can grow with baby. That is the trend today and it makes a lot of sense.
My client, who is expecting her first baby, purchased a Stanley seven drawer dresser from Craigslist to use as a changing table. She asked me to paint it for her and decided on a soft white since that would fit best with her decor over the long run.
Here it is all finished. I no longer have a nursery items around, so I staged it with some fall decor. As you can see, it is the perfect height for changing baby, and offers a ton of storage. This piece can easily transition from changing table, to dresser, to buffet or even media storage.
This dresser started out as your basic honey maple dresser. The top had some deep scratches and the finish was generally worn. The rest of the dresser was in good shape.
I sanded the entire piece and then primed it. I always lightly sand after priming and between coats of paint to get a smooth finish. I painted it with a custom white using a mix of General Finishes antique white and snow white. This piece took 3 coats to get good coverage, which isn’t bad. I then sealed it with General Finishes high performance top coat in flat.
I added some pretty knobs from my stash for staging.
I have used these knobs before and I just love them.
I used simple black knobs for the smaller top drawers.
If you have read any of my other posts, you know I love hydrangeas. These hydrangeas from my garden have gone from pink to purple and now green. How cool is that?
Have a great day!
