If you have ever been to an estate sale, you know the competition can be fierce. It’s a full on sport for some folks. My elderly neighbor recently passed away, and an estate sale was held at her home. Being directly across the street, I had a front row seat for all the goings on.
The Friday before the sale, a sign up sheet was placed on the front door. An eager woman promptly showed up and put her name first on the list. Now, you would think that would be sufficient to satisfy her first place entry into the sale, but no. Rather than leave and come back the next morning at 9 am when the sale started, she decided to sleep in her car in front of my home. That’s a bit over the top for me, but here’s where it gets really cuckoo. Before going to sleep for the night, she got out of her car, squatted down and relieved herself on the parking strip. I suppose you do what you need to do when you are a diehard estate sale goer. I love a good deal as much as the next guy, but there is no way I will ever go that far. Not gonna happen.
My estate sale strategy, on the other hand, is to show up during the last hour of the sale. No crowds, no lines, and certainly no parking strip peeing going on. I realize this tactic won’t land me any of the best merch, but it is when the best deals can be had. That’s exactly how I scored this mid century cutie. It was the only piece of furniture left and was hidden under a mass of snow globes and Santa statues in a corner of the basement. It was just calling out for me to take it home. And so I did.
The dresser is made by Stanley and was in excellent structural condition. Just a beautifully made piece.
The original brass hardware was all intact. It just needed a little scrub with Brasso to make it shine.
I sanded and primed the entire piece. I filled the deeper gouges with wood filler. I then painted it with Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Coral Gables. I had purchased the paint at least 6 months ago with the intent of using it on another piece. As I often do, I changed my design plan and ended up not using it. I thought this dresser would look great with the pretty pinkish coral color. The sophisticated shade looks amazing with the brass hardware.
Look at those drawer pulls. Love.
Have you noticed I have a thing for the Eiffel Tower? Yes. Yes, I do.
I would love to hear about your estate sale adventures. Have a great weekend, friends.

You sure picked the perfect color for that piece. I love that coral. It is stunning. I enjoy going to estate sales and have had some pretty good luck at them, however, I have never felt the need to pee I’m the street just to make sure I got a deal! Ha! I guess it takes all kinds.

I really do love estate sales, too. As for peeing in the street, never say never! Haha

Lovely color! As well as an entertaining story!!
Years ago with little money I was able to wait out the sale and go back the last day for a small walnut tobacco stand, copper lined as well!

I love the brass hardware. And your simple decor on top of the dresser really highlight the simplicity of the midcentury dresser. Nice job!
