Sometimes when I find a piece of furniture I know exactly how I want to update it. I have a vision for it and I see that vision through. Other times, I change my mind at least a hundred times before finally settling on a design. That was the case with this vintage vanity made by White Furniture Company. It is maple and solid as a rock. These old pieces were sure built to last. Here is the CL photo (I have been terrible lately about taking my own “before” photos).
My design for this piece went from white to blue to coral to gray and back to blue again. Not to mention the dozens of hardware options I considered. I think the reason I changed my design so many times was because there were so many great ways to go. Really, any of them would have worked. I honestly did not make up my mind about the color choice until just before I started painting. Are you ready to see the final design? I decided to go for blue.
When I picked up this piece, the seller through in a chair for free (not the chair pictured). When I got it home, I discovered that the chair he gave me did not actually fit in the opening of the desk. As luck would have it, I found another chair at an estate sale (pictured) that I thought would look nice. I measured it and found that it would fit perfectly. I have a small tape measure that I keep in my purse for just such an emergency. 🙂
I updated the chair with General Finishes milk paint in antique white. The original chair seat was covered in a tattered red pleather-like material and the underlying foam was well past its prime. I added new foam and covered the seat with a faux sheepskin. It’s so comfy and soft now. The sheepskin gives it a more modern edge, too. But I suppose just about anything is more modern than tattered red pleather.
I sanded the entire piece and painted it with Fusion Mineral Paint in “Seaside.” It’s a really pretty ocean blue color and the coverage is amazing. One coat plus a few touch up areas.
I added new silver and cream knobs from Cost Plus.
Because of the mirror, I believe this piece was originally intended to be a vanity. It could certainly still function as one. It has loads of storage and would also work well as a small desk. Stash a basket underneath and it would be great in an entry.
Oh, that blue is so pretty. I love my blue.
Thanks for stopping by!

Amazing peace of furniture. Can’t believe it’s the old one you bought and became like new. It reminded me of Cinderella.
