I am so excited to share my latest makeover with you today and tell you about a new (to me) paint called Velvet Finishes. I picked up these midcentury chairs last summer at the Goodwill. I was immediately drawn to their great lines. Upon inspection, I noticed that they were also very solid. Score! The original upholstery had been covered over with some fancy needlepoint that, let’s just say, isn’t my cup of tea. I’m sure someone put a lot of time into making it, so after removing it, I donated it back to the Goodwill. I just didn’t feel right about throwing it away.
The wood on these chairs is very pretty, and I considered just refinishing them. That was until my design plan took a 180 degree turn. For some time now, I had been wanting to try a furniture paint called Velvet Finishes. In particular, I loved the stunning color called Glamorous, which is a bold orchid pink. Kellie Smith is an interior designer who developed the paint specifically for furniture and cabinets. She kindly sent me some paint and a couple of other products to try.
With this system, there is no need to sand or prime most surfaces. That said, old habits die hard and I did lightly sand the surface of the chairs and then gave them a thorough cleaning. I then sprayed on the product called Ready. I let it sit for a few minutes and then wiped it off. Using a brush, I applied four thin coats of the paint. It went on smooth and dried fairly quickly. The paint has a matte finish on its own. After the fourth coat had dried, I applied the Protect. It is a satin poly that was much thinner than other polys I have used. I would say it has the consistency of water. It’s very runny and I had to be careful to watch for drips. I applied two coats and it gave the chairs a smooth satin finish.
The pink color is gorgeous and definitely makes a statement. I really loved the paint and am happy to add another great product to my painting arsenal.
Thanks for stopping by!

LOVE the chairs.
Pink would not be my go to color normally but I can’t help thinking how great that shade would look on the vanity in a powder room.
I have tried Velvet Finishes on a couple of very small projects and am
looking forward to painting a piece of furniture in the near future.
Love your chairs and the fact that you gave the needlepoint another
chance in someone else’s home!!!!
