Hi Friends!
I am back today with another farm table makeover. I found this one at my favorite Goodwill last week. It had definitely seen better days and the honey pine was straight out of the ’90’s. The turned legs, the drawer, and the simple style are perfect for a farmhouse makeover. This table had been heavily distressed when I found it, as in someone had beaten the pulp out of this table, so I decided to go with the distressed look. Here it is after I started to fill some of the larger scratches and gouges.
And here she is all prettied up.

After filling the deep imperfections, I sanded the entire piece. I then gave it two coats of Shellac Primer and three coats of General Finishes Antique White milk paint. Using a sanding sponge 220-grit, I lightly distressed the areas where wear would naturally occur – the corners, edges, etc. I sealed the entire piece with 3 coats of General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Flat.
I added a new knob to the drawer.
This table is so farmhouse fresh now.
You can see the table all set for the holidays here.
Thanks for stopping by!

Wow! That is a transformation for SURE! Beautifully done! Where did you find the chair slip covers?
Susan says
Thank you Donna! The chairs and slipcovers are from Ballard Designs. I have had the chairs for over 12 years and replaced the covers a few times since I first bought them.

That is the loveliest table re-do ever! The drawer knob adds just the right touch. I will be searching the thrift stores for something similar!

It beautiful thanks for sharing.

This is such a lovely table now that you put your touches on it. I have a console table to work on and I am going to do it in white also and sand the edges like you did. Bravo!
Susan says
Thank you Elaine! Good luck with your console table.

It deserves nothing but praise; the outcome is awesome. How long did it take to do the table?
Susan says
Thank you so much! The table didn’t take too long, just a couple of days. General Finishes products dry quickly, so I was able to recoat very fast. Susan

Found your post just in time! I purchased a very similar table at an auction for $9.50 (it evendors has those cute ltitle drawers). I knew I wanted white, just wasn’t sure of the product to use. General Finishes Antique White arrives tomorrow. It’s primed and ready to go. Thanks for the direction. Can’t wait to see it finished. Hope it’s half as beautiful as yours.
Susan says
That is so exciting Trina! I think you will really like General Finishes. It’s such a great paint to use. We have used our table daily since I painted it and it is holding up so well. I definitely recommend a topcoat, though, for a table. I use and love General Finishes High Performance topcoat.
Suzanne says
Awesome! I’ve used General’s milk paint before but I had a difficult time spreading the paint without leaving bristle marks from the paint brush. And I also found it awkward and messy using a foam applicator. What did you use to apply the paint and end up with such a perfect finish?
Also, I’m curious, why did you use another product prior to painting it?
I would love to know how to do this properly so I end up with a professional looking piece of furniture after. So far they are coming out looking ‘hand painted’. 🙁
Susan says
Hi Suzanne! For this projects I used a brush and foam roller. Using a quality brush is important – I use Purdy brushes on my painted pieces. One of the keys to getting a smooth finish (without spraying) is to used thin coats. If the paint is too thick, you can add a bit of water. Also, sanding lightly between coats helps to create a smooth finish. Prior to painting, I used a shellac based primer. Hang in there and good luck with your painted furniture! Susan

I love the work you’ve done. I just anted to know how did you get the damaged part of the table to be smooth?
Susan says
Thank you! I used wood filler to fill the large defects and then sanded.

Where do you find things like drawer pulls and knobs?
Susan says
Hi! I have a few favorite places for pulls and knobs. Hobby Lobby has a huge selection. D Lawless Hardware is an online source with great selection and prices. Anthropology has knobs as well, but they tend to be a bit more expensive.

Thank you so much! My daughter repainted a table and we have been looking for some small ones. I love your work!
Karina says
Love it!!!! What’s the color of your walls?
Susan says
Thanks so much Karina! The walls in the dining room are Chelsea Gray and the kitchen is Pale Smoke, both by Benjamin Moore. Susan

Susan, What a beautiful transformation! I have a sort of unrelated question. – Where did you purchase your placemats? I love them/and the napkins!
Susan says
Hi Debbie – Thanks for your sweet comment. The placemats and napkins are from HomeGoods. I purchased them last year, but I have also seen them there recently. After purchasing them, I noticed that the placemats are not machine washable. I tried washing them anyway, and they do not wash up well. They faded and shrunk. I personally want to be able to machine wash placemats, but that may not be a concern for you. Thanks for stopping by! Susan

Love this kitchen. I’m in the midst of renivationing. Can you tell me the flooring used in the picture (company and stain)?
Susan says
Hi Joanne, The floors were installed by the builder, and I don’t have the info on the company. But, I do know they are light oak with a natural finish. Good luck with your kitchen renovation. That is so exciting! Susan
Brenda says
