I’ve got a quick before and after makeover of a vintage desk for you today. This is a piece I picked up awhile back, started working on it, and then got distracted with other projects. Does that happen to you? Oh well, yesterday the sun was out, so I pulled this guy out of the garage and got ‘er done.

After
I stripped the top thinking I would refinish and stain it, but then discovered the veneer wasn’t in great shape. So I switched gears and decided to paint the entire piece. I think this style of desk looks so handsome painted in dark colors like black, navy or charcoal. I decided to go with a dark charcoal, almost black paint.
After sanding and cleaning the entire piece, I painted it with three coats of Bluestone House chalk paint in “Vintage Velvet.” It’s a new to me paint, but I really liked it. It went on smooth and sanded nicely. The paint has lots of dimension in the color with some blue undertones.
I cleaned up the pulls with plain dish soap and water. I wanted to keep the original patina and not make them too shiny, so I didn’t use any type of brass polish.
I lightly distressed the raised areas with my sanding sponge to let some of the wood tones show. I then sealed the entire piece with Magnolia clear wax. After it was dry, I went over a few areas with Miss Mustard Seed’s white wax to add to the vintage look.
That’s it! Thanks for dropping by today.

Lovely!
I am especially interested in the use of the two different waxes.
Very effective in adding extra depth to the piece.

Thank you, Lee! I’m fairly new to using wax, so definitely not an expert, but I like the ability to create vintage inspired finishes and dimension with the colored waxes. I always enjoy learning and trying out new products. Susan
