Right now the hydrangeas in my garden are in full bloom, and that makes me so happy! One of the many reasons I love hydrangeas is that they are so easy to arrange. They basically do all the work for you. Seriously, you can’t go wrong. And that is perfect for me because I am no floral arranger.
I’ve got a quick and easy hydrangea centerpiece idea perfect for summer.
Hydrangeas feel so nostalgic and romantic to me. They are cottagey and beautiful, and never feel pretentious.
I wanted to display them in a loose, unstructured and natural way. I used a combination of “Endless Summer” and “Preziosa” hydrangeas from my garden, along with an old rustic European wood bowl that I picked up antiquing a couple of years ago. It’s a simple arrangement with a big impact. I love how it looks on my dining table.
Even if you don’t have hydrangeas growing in your garden, they are readily available at the grocery store which is wonderful. You could even use faux hydrangeas for a more permanent look.
Under the window is a little peek at an antique blanket chest I recently painted. I absolutely love the way it turned out, and will be sharing more photos and a proper blog post on it soon. For now, Louie has decided that it makes a good spot for an afternoon nap. As I was tidying up, I temporarily placed a tray on top of the chest. Louie quickly proceeded to curl up in it, and I didn’t have the heart to move him.
I would say by the look on his face, he didn’t want to be moved, either. You just don’t mess around with a 22 pound cat.
Back to the hydrangeas. To keep them fresh, I placed a shallow ceramic dish in the bottom of the wood bowl. I then laid the hydrangeas around the perimeter of the bowl with their stems in the water. To add a bit of height and support to the center hydrangeas, I used a small ceramic flower pot, and placed a few stems in the center. See, easy!
Of course, hydrangeas always look lovely simply placed in a pretty pitcher. I found a blue and white striped ironstone pitcher at the Goodwill last spring, and it is still one of my favorites. You can see how I styled it for spring here.
One last look at those pretty pink hydrangeas.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Susan

This is such a pretty way to display your hydrangeas! I have some purple ones that I love – although mine are having a hard time right now with the heat wave we’ve been having in portland :0

Thank you so much, Tiffany! I have had to give my hydrangeas a little extra water and attention this summer, too. I have been really babying the Little Limes I planted last year, and hoping to get them off to a good start. I hope you are staying cool in our PNW heat! Susan

Simple and beautiful arrangement and I love, love, love your whole kitchen. Louie curled up in your tray with his “cattitude” is the icing!
Susan says
Thank you, Ann! LOL – Love the cattitude!

Love your displays, Susan. I look forward to all your posts as they are brilliant!
Unfortunately for me, my hydrangeas didn’t bloom again this year so I must satisfy myself with silk =(
Susan says
Thank you so much, Judy! Oh, I am so sorry to hear about your hydrangeas. I love the silk hydrangeas, too. There are some very realistic looking ones, and the nice part is that they last forever!

Susan, your hydrangeas in the wooden bowl are so pretty. You really can not go wrong with hydrangeas!
Your cat has the best look on his face? 22 lbs? That’s a big cat!
Susan says
Thanks, Stacey! Yes, Louie is a big guy. He’s been on a diet for over a year now, and somehow managed to gain 2 pounds. Sounds kinda like how my diet has gone.
