Fall is just around the corner (I know, where did summer go?!) While I’m not ready to bring out any pumpkins just yet, I am slowly adding texture and coziness to my home. In anticipation of the cooler months ahead, I made some simple changes to the sitting area in our master bedroom. I’m sharing some ideas for creating a cozy sitting area perfect for relaxing, refreshing, and inspiring.
Comfortable Seating
Start with a cozy chair or two. I wanted to create a relaxing conversation area in our master bedroom, so I used two chairs. A single chair would be perfect for a quiet reading space.
I brought up the white slipcovered chair from our den. I think it will get used in this space a bit more, so I’m trying it out here. The leather chair is one I have had for many years. The “sink right in goodness” and generous arms make this chair just wrap around you when you sit in it. The worn leather contrasts nicely with the more feminine elements in this space. I would like to add an ottoman, too, which I think would be perfect.
Lighting
In this space, the natural light from the windows feels soft and comforting. A table or floor lamp would be great in a darker space, or when reading in the evening is desired.
Accent Table
Add a small table to create a landing spot for drinks, reading materials, etc. It doesn’t need to be large, just big enough for a book, lamp and a cup of tea or glass of wine.
The wood accent table in my space is a new piece. I’ve had my eye on this particular table for awhile, and finally decided to go for it. Oh my goodness, I love this table! I think it works perfectly between the two chairs. The raw wood is textural and warm. The turned detail on the center pedestal is so stunning.
Reading Materials
Have your favorite books and magazines stowed nearby for easy access when you are ready to relax. A basket filled with knitting supplies or other needle work would be wonderful. Perhaps you enjoy writing in a journal or drawing in a sketch book. Anything that helps you relax and refresh will do the trick.
Elements from Nature
Adding fresh (or faux) flowers to your space is a simple touch, but feels luxurious at the same time. I picked the pretty hydrangeas from my garden. They are turning such beautiful colors right now – pinks, greens, and burgundy. A little plant on the table would be just as lovely. It could even be something as simple as a single flower or branch in a vase. Small touches that connect us to nature inspire and calm.
Candles
A flickering candle adds ambiance with its soft and warm glow. Don’t hesitate to actually light your candles. You know who you are. . . saving those candles! Choose a scent you love and enjoy it. My candle is from Antique Candle Works, and the scent is called Wildflowers. Their candles are so amazing, the scent is lovely and fills our entire home when I light it.
Artwork
Consider adding artwork and personal photos that spark happiness when you see them. The portrait of the woman with flowers was a Goodwill find, and I adore it. Her facial expression is relaxed and the colors serene. The blue, green, and blush tones in the painting have definitely inspired the color scheme for this space.
Soft Fabrics
Add a fluffy pillow or two and a warm throw for snuggling on cool days. I have used linen and velvet to warm up this space and add softness and texture. I put away the crisp white and summery blue linens, and added in some earthy muted tones of blush and sage green for a softer, hushed feel in this space.
Remove the Clutter
Finally, remove the distractions and clutter. Edit your space so that you are surrounded only with those things that soothe and comfort you.
Do you have a cozy sitting area in your home? If not, I hope my ideas will inspire you to carve out a peaceful little nook of your own.
Here’s to a wonderful fall season, my friends.

Oh my goodness, I love the feel of this room! Question about that gorgeous pedestal table…are you concerned about the raw, unfinished nature of it or did you oil it, etc? I would hate to water stain it.
Susan says
Hi Mary Kay! I left the table unsealed/raw for now. I’m thinking I may seal it with Fusion Beeswax Finish which is a hemp oil and beeswax sealer. I want to keep the raw/matte look of the wood, and this product is great for that. I used it on my den table that I left raw and it is working really well to protect it. I just reapply every so often.
