I started collecting vintage and thrifted mason jars years ago. I love them so much, and I use them all over my home. I see them regularly in thrift shops, and they are still quite inexpensive. I am not an expert by any means, and purchase them when I am drawn to a particular style or color. Today, I’m sharing some tips and ideas for decorating with mason jars.
Flower Arrangements
To me, nothing is more beautiful than a simple floral arrangement in a mason jar. I love the light green color of this Boyd Mason jar with the Limelight hydrangeas.
Nothing fancy here. I picked a few pretty pink sweet peas from the side of the road, and love how they contrast with the bright blue. This small jar fits perfectly on a repurposed ledge.
Bathroom Display and Storage
Another pretty and simple arrangement with faux hydrangeas in a clear mason jar. I picked this jar because of the rustic metal and glass lid. It adds a bit of vintage charm to our powder room.
Mason jars also make lovely storage in the bathroom. I used a vintage blue Ball jar to hold my cotton balls when I organized under my bathroom sink.
Laundry Room Storage
I placed a collection of Atlas and Ball jars on the shelf in my laundry room. They hold laundry room essentials and add a pop of color to the neutral space.
A clear jar holds dried lavender from my garden.
Kitchen
I love to display my mason jar collection in the kitchen. The jars add interest and color to our mostly white kitchen. They can be seen through the glass cabinet doors and on the small shelves near the stove. A few vintage pieces help to up the charm factor in a newer kitchen with slick surfaces.
Collections
Small collections can be corralled in mason jars. I used them on the shelves in Sadie’s bedroom to hold some vintage paint brushes and a beach glass collection. The clear jars allow the pretty colors of the beach glass to show.
I used a green Boyd mason jar to hold a few shells in a summery vignette.

Candles
Mason jars make beautiful candles, and my favorites are from Antique Candle Works.
Night stand / Striped pillow sham
Seriously, how gorgeous is the blue mason jar candle? It’s my favorite.
The photo on my nightstand is my mom and aunt when they were quite little. On the back of the photo in my Grandma’s handwriting, it says “Jenny and Ellen. My wee pets.” I just love that.
Antique Candle Works candles also come in clear mason jars with metal lids. So pretty, right?
Merrick Side Table / Cozy Bedroom Seating Area / Blush Floral Pillow
You can make your own votive by placing a candle in the bottom of a mason jar. They are so nice for using outdoors because the glass shields the candle and prevents it from blowing out. Best of all, you probably have all of these simple supplies in your cupboard.
Magnolia Green Farm Table Makeover
I nestled the candle in a bit of kosher salt in the bottom of the jar to keep it level.
Do you love vintage mason jars, too? How do you like to use them? I’d love to know!

Love this post! I am also in love with mason jars. Where do you find the greenish ones? Thanks
Susan says
Thank you, Sara! All of my mason jars are thrift store finds. The green Boyd jars are also from the thrift store. I don’t see them very often, and am on the hunt for more! I have seen them on Etsy and Ebay, but they can be quite expensive.

This whole gallery of photos is beautiful, calm, and relaxing. And you have given me some great ideas! I recently learned about the history of Ball jars from Muncie, Indiana. I believe the story is that the Ball brothers opened a factory there to produce jars, and called them Ball jars. There is a historical park in Muncie where the brothers built a series of homes for their family. The college in Muncie is also call “Ball State”.

Thank you, Kristine, for sharing that history. It makes my beloved Ball jars all the more special!

Excellent article. Your home always looks lovely. If you can’t find colored Mason jars, you can use beach glass spray paint which comes in lovely colors to paint clear jars. I’ve used sand instead of Kosher salt under votives in Mason jars. It adds that beachy look and like the salt, levels the candle and prevents melted wax from melting onto the glass.

Thanks for the tip about the glass spray paint! I’m going to have to give that a try.
