Hi Friends,
Have you ever had spring cleaning go completely off the rails? I’m talking sell all the furniture, paint the walls, take down the curtains off the rails? That’s exactly what has happened to me. What started as a little cleaning in Sadie’s bedroom turned into an entire room makeover. Truth is, I’ve been working hard to give my entire home a bit of a design reset of sorts. Painting, purging, rearranging and lots of cleaning. I haven’t posted in awhile, but I’m still here and I have lots of projects to share with you! I’m starting with the refresh I gave to Sadie’s bedroom.

As I said, I started with a “little” spring cleaning by moving almost everything out of her room. At that point, I thought it made sense to just go ahead and paint, since everything was out of the way. I loved the blue paint we had in there before, but decided to go with a more neutral color this time. The color is Benjamin Moore “Dove Wing” and it is the softest creamy warm gray white. It feels light and fresh without being cold and stark.
Since I was painting, I went ahead and took down the curtains. And then I thought I should probably just go ahead and clean the carpets, too. With the curtains down, I realized I actually liked the cleaner look. I think the window trim looks pretty without the curtains. Just for grins and giggles, I got rid of the old blinds, too. I added new woven wood shades that are light, but add some soft texture to the room. They are cordless and so easy to use.
The woven shades are the Designer Reserve Woven Wood Shades from Select Blinds and the color is Bali Sand. I’m in love with them!
When I was painting the room, I rotated the bed 90 degrees and loved the new layout. I sold Sadie’s old dresser and corner shelf, and opted for two large matching nightstands on each side of the bed. I switched out the knobs that came with the nightstands for vintage style glass knobs.
Speaking of her bed, I painted it! Are you starting to see what I mean about spring cleaning gone off the rails? Ha!
The bed is an antique that I picked up at the Goodwill a couple of years ago. I loved the original dark finish, but it was pretty worn, and the side rails didn’t match, necessitating a bedskirt to hide them. I decided to freshen up the bed with a warm white. I lightly sanded, cleaned, and primed with a stain blocking primer since old antique pieces are notorious bleeders. I then painted it with 3 coats of a custom mix of General Finishes milk paint. I used approximately 3 parts Snow White and 1 part Antique White. I sealed it with 2 coats of General Finishes Topcoat in Flat.
The prettiest part of this bed is the detail on the foot board. With the new room layout, it’s now the first thing you see when you enter.
The arched wood mirror was in my powder room, and I moved it in here. Sadie wanted a mirror, and this one fit perfectly here. I’m still on the hunt for a new mirror for the powder room, though.
This bedroom is small, but I found a pretty slipcovered wingback chair that fits in the corner. It’s taller and the scale works well with her bed. The slipcover that came with it was a bit too yellowish beige, so I bleached it and it lightened up beautifully. I just soaked in it a large tub with a concentrated bleach solution for about an hour, rinsed and washed on delicate cycle. It’s now a soft white that works well in her room.
The pink hydrangeas are from my garden. I love them so.
Thanks so much for stopping by. I’ve missed sharing my projects with you all, and am so excited to show you the rest!
Have a great weekend, friends!
Susan

I am so glad you are back, and so looking forward to more posts to come! I’m a sucker for anything buffalo check, so of course I think the bedspread is adorable. And the re-bed frame is beautiful!

Thank you, Karen! I love to use antique pieces in my home – they just add so much character and charm. Sadie’s bed was a great find!

Lovely makeover, looks more grown-up. The paint on the bed frame really makes a huge difference. I really like the blinds and just perused their website; dang they are expensive but maybe they will have a good sale! Too bad about that dresser, it was gorgeous! Hope to see more postings, thanks.
Susan says
Hi Mary! Yes, the new woven shades were definitely an investment. I have some other more budget friendly window treatments that I have used in other places in my home (including one DIY), and I will be sharing those soon. Stay tuned! As for the dresser, we really did love it, but it just didn’t work with the new arrangement. Luckily, I found a great new owner who loved it, too.

Looks beautiful just like all the other things you have posted!
Susan says
Thanks so much, Lynn. That is so nice of you to say!
Wendy says
Gorgeous! Just wondering – does the General Finishes topcoat make the white paint slightly yellower?
Susan says
Hi Wendy! I have never had a problem with General Finishes water-based topcoats yellowing, which is why I love using it on my white painted pieces.
Kelly says
Looks fantastic! The one thing you didn’t tell us is the one thing I want to know….of course! What color is the trim in the room? It looks great against the wall color! Glad you’re posting again!
Susan says
Thanks, Kelly! The trim color is a custom color that the builder used when we moved in, so I don’t know exactly what it is. It is close to Benjamin Moore “Cloud White” maybe just slightly more creamy. I hope that helps!

Hi Susan! I love the changes to Sadies room…so fresh and light (especially when wintertime hits in Seattle). A couple of questions. What stain block primer do you use? Where do you find the great thrift pieces you’ve painted? Do you have a favorite thrift in Seattle?
Susan says
Hi! My go to stain-blocking primer is BIN Zinsser shellac based primer. My favorite Seattle thrifting spot is the Ballard Goodwill. The Shoreline Goodwill is great, too!

I adore this room!!!! It’s perfect! Do you have a source for the rug? I’d really appreciate it if you do. I love the way the dark blue contrasts the white bed. So glad I found your Instagram account and then your blog.
Susan says
Hi! I am so happy to hear that you found my blog, and that you love Sadie’s bedroom refresh. The source for the blue rug is linked at the bottom of the post. I hope that helps!
Paula says
Just found your blog and can’t wait to go through all your posts as I am someone who loves redoing furniture and decorating. What do you do with all the pieces you refinish; I have no room in my house any more.
Where is the bolster pillow from that is on the master bed that is grain sack with a blue strip?
I would say that Sadie is one lucky girl (don’t know how old she is) to get her room refreshed so many times and I’ve liked every one.
