One of my goals this past year has been to simplify and edit the decor throughout my home. I’m not done, but I’ve made a lot of progress! Today I’m sharing our simplified, calm and cozy neutral master bedroom. I’ve listed all the sources at the bottom of this post.

In keeping with my goal to simplify, I didn’t want to add a lot of specific fall themed decor to this space. Instead, to welcome the fall season, I have added warmth with texture, layers of textiles, soft neutral colors, and cozy throws. I’ve used a tone on tone color palette, taking inspiration from the driftwood mirror.
I replaced our old headboard with a new linen wingback bed. I like that it has upholstered side rails, and I no longer need to use a bedskirt. I think it creates a simpler look. The linen and tufting add texture and interest. Plus, it’s perfect for reading and relaxing in bed.
I’ve been slowly switching my bedding over to linen pieces. It can get expensive, so I’ve been upgrading slowly. I love how it feels, and it breathes much better than cotton. It does rumple (which is part of the charm to me), but if you like perfectly smooth sheets and bedding, this might not be for you.
The neutral cable knit pillows are my favorites. They add that bit of texture and interest to the simple color palette.
The vintage wood bead chandelier was previously in my dining room. I’ve done some rearranging in there, and unfortunately, the chandy no longer worked in that space. It’s one of my all time favorite finds, so I moved it into the master bedroom. In this simple space, the chandy becomes the star of the show!
Another awesome Craigslist find was the white slipcovered chair in the sitting area. I knew I would probably never get lucky enough to find another one on CL, so I finally purchased one to match. Now I have a matching set, which works well with the simplified look I’m after.
One of Louie’s favorite napping spots. He’s never met a white slipcover he didn’t love to leave his black fur all over. Thank goodness they are washable.
If you are a regular here, you already know I’ve been upgrading the window treatments in my home. I showed you the natural woven shades I used in Sadie’s bedroom makeover and our powder room. Not gonna lie, the woven shades can get expensive. In our master, I used affordable classic linen roman shades with black out lining. They provide the perfect clean and tailored look I’m after, and they are a more affordable option.
Funny story. My husband didn’t know I had installed the new shades in our bedroom (I did it in a couple of hours while he was at work). He got home late and went straight to bed. The next morning he slept in late, woke up dazed and confused, not knowing what time it was because the room was so dark! Needless to say, the black out lining is great for sleeping in late.
The drapes are the Ritva from IKEA, which is another wonderful affordable option. They look like white linen, for a fraction of the cost. I’ve had them for awhile and finally got around to sewing the pinch pleats and properly hemming them. I even taught myself how to sew a blind hem with my sewing machine. I then hung them using rings and drapery hooks.
The natural wood pedestal table is still one of my favorite pieces ever. I love the raw wood look with the white slipcovers.
I gave the shelves in my little office space some new styling, too. Here’s a peek.
By the way, I had lots of comments about my fiddle leaf fig on Instagram. It’s huge and thriving! I’m thinking of sharing a blog post about how I take care of it. Let me know if this would interest you.
As always, thank you so much for stopping by today. I truly appreciate all of you, and each and every comment, like and share you give!

Absolutely lovely! Love the neutral color palette. Heading in that direction for my living room! It’s so soothing…
Susan says
Thanks so very much! I’m loving neutrals, especially for this fall season. The nice thing is that it is so easy to add back in a pop of color (which will likely happen during Christmas!).

Hi Susan,
I want to share a product with you that I have found to be very handy. I have draperies throughout my home like the ones you have hung in your bedroom. Over time they became harder and harder to slide across the rod. The product I found is Rowley Silicone Spray – recommended to me by the drapery person who had to repair my rod after I tugged it out of the wall. Specially formulated for drapery hardware, a tiny spay along the rod makes the rings just glide. It does not harm fabric. You must buy it on the Rowley website, I haven’t found it anywhere else. One can will probably last a lifetime.
Your make-over looks fabulous!

Serene, calm and beautiful Susan the neutrals say it all, I live on a beach in Australia and this is just how I like it, I particularly like the bed design and neat finish..not a fan of valances at all, we have most retailers here you have used and excellent product sources, I see a change coming!!
Susan says
Thank you, Leone! Wow, a beach in Australia – that sounds like a dream! Many years ago, I visited Sydney and drove down to Melbourne. We decided to stop at a secluded beach along the way. We had the whole gorgeous beach to ourselves, along with about 20 kangaroos (wallabies, maybe?). It was one of the most magical experiences of my life.
Leone jennings says
Our kangaroos often visit the beach, I had a rescue Joey once and she would follow me down to the beach for a ‘swim’ then back for the usual outdoor shower rinse off, we have many living
around here, my daughter has been living in Santa Barbara for 8 years and is now home, along with her she brought her Carolina dog…..he loves the beach, you have a beautiful country, enjoyed all our visits,,I might add our CD hasn’t seen a kangaroo yet!!

Lovely, calm, serene – your bedroom is perfect! Neutrals are definitely the way to go as any accent color one wants to use will work. I like the trend towards paring down that is growing. Not a hard “minimalist” look but a softer interpretation. Comfortable, uncluttered but still welcoming. I look forward to seeing more of your decorating decisions. P.S. – Your
Fiddle leaf Fig is awesome!
Susan says
Thank you, Jill. I am definitely not a minimalist, but just trying for a calm, cozy and livable home. You are exactly right about neutrals providing the perfect base to add an accent color. I’m already planning my pops of red for the holidays!
Beth says
Hi……I am interested in the shelves. Where did you purchase them and did you paint them?
Thanks! 🙂
Susan says
Hi! The shelves in our master bedroom are the Billy shelves from IKEA. I hacked them by attaching two shelving units together and adding trim to make them look custom. Unfortunately, I completed this project before I started blogging (back in 2014) and I don’t have a tutorial. I hope that helps!
Wendy says
I love your bedroom update! What color are the roman shades? I love the way they look!
Susan says
Thank you, Wendy! The roman shades are the linen natural with black out lining.
