I’ve got a super simple and quick DIY for you today! Sometimes the simple ones are the best, right? I upcycled a thrift store cutting board into a modern farmhouse plank, and I am thrilled how it turned out. I’m calling it a “farmhouse plank,” but it could be a bread board, serving board, charcuterie board, etc. I plan to use my modern farmhouse plank DIY as a decorative centerpiece for my island and dining table.
I styled it for fall with pretty white pumpkins and a couple sprigs of seeded eucalyptus.
Let me show you how easy this project is.
Before
I found a generously sized wood cutting board at the thrift store last week, and while it was fine as is, I decided to add a bit of modern farmhouse style to it.
It’s hard to tell the scale, but it’s almost 3 feet long. Perfect for a table centerpiece display.
Materials Used

- Frogtape textured surface kit
- Fusion Mineral Paint in “Raw Silk”
- General Finishes Flat out Flat Topcoat
- Wooster Foam Brush for topcoat (these are my favs)
- Thrifted cutting board
Steps
1. Prep the cutting board
My cutting board looked to be fairly new, so I just gave it a quick cleaning and let it dry. You might need to give yours a light sanding to smooth it out.
2. Measure and tape off the stripes
I decided I wanted a wood stripe at each end. That way, I can create my display in the center of the board and the wood stripes will show at each end. Just eyeing placement, I measured and marked off 4 inches from each end.
I initially applied regular green painter’s tape (shown in the photo above), but it wasn’t sticking to the wood surface. I remembered that I had a Frogtape textured surface kit in my stash, and decided to give it a try. I wanted to be sure to have really sharp paint lines, and this kit worked perfectly! It’s made for creating sharp lines on textured walls, and it also worked great on the subtly textured wood plank.
I applied the tape, wiped with a damp cloth to activate the adhesive, applied the sealer using the applicator provided in the kit, and let it dry for about 15 minutes.
3. Paint the board
I wanted a wood and white two tone board, so I brushed on a pretty white called “Raw Silk” from Fusion Mineral Paint. I applied 3 coats of the paint to get good coverage, and let dry between coats. I did lightly sand with 220 grit sandpaper between coats for a smooth finish.
4. Apply topcoat
Once dry, I sealed the entire board with 3 coats of General Finishes Flat out Flat topcoat using my favorite foam brush. Again, I gave the board a light sanding between coats. Fusion Mineral Paint has a built in topcoat, so an additional topcoat is not always necessary. I added the Flat out Flat topcoat to add a bit of extra durability.
5. Add twine loop
To finish, I added a small bit of twine to the handle. That’s it! Easy peasy and done in an afternoon.
Please note, I am planning on using this modern farmhouse plank DIY for decor only (not food service), so I didn’t worry about using products rated as food safe for this project.
After
Here it is all styled for fall in my kitchen.
Perfect sharp paint lines. I breathed a sigh of relief as I pulled off the tape to reveal crisp lines, lol!
It makes such a pretty fall display in my kitchen.
Please let me know if you have any questions about my modern farmhouse plank DIY. Have a great weekend, friends!

This is such a great idea! I love your kitchen and would like to know if you have more overhead lighting. I looked back on some previous posts but can’t see anything. I’m remodeling our church parsonage and it looks similar to your kitchen with white cabinets and white subway tile. I love the way your kitchen is so fresh and clean. Thanks

Thank you so much, Cecilia! Yes, we do have overhead lighting. We have the pendants over the island, recessed lights and also under cabinet lighting. Good luck with your remodel. In my humble opinion, you can’t go wrong with a white kitchen and subway tile – classic and timeless!
