Hello, Friends!
First, thank you for all your sweet comments last week on my office makeover. I appreciate all of you and your kind words more than you could know.
So, has summer weather arrived where you are? Here in Seattle we don’t usually see sunny and warm days until after July 4th, and I’m ready for it! With all the extra time spent at home, our outdoor spaces have been a blessing for sure. I made a few changes to our front porch for the season, and today I have a quick post to share my summer porch style.

I found the vintage drop leaf table a couple of years ago at the Goodwill, and it’s a nice size for our narrow porch. I think I paid $7, so it was a great find for sure. You can see it here on my fall porch.
I gave it a little refresh and protection using exterior white paint that I had on hand. I cleaned it up, gave the legs a light sanding, a coat of primer, and 3 coats of the exterior white paint. I sanded the top a bit with 120 grit sandpaper, and applied 3 coats of General Finishes exterior topcoat. The table is on our covered porch, and I wanted to not only freshen it up but also protect it from the weather. The paint and topcoat also make it easy to wipe down and keep clean.
The wicker chairs are from IKEA. I’ve had them for years, and have used them both inside and out. I also added a pair of white cafe chairs to create cozy seating for four. They are actually made of plastic (or resin) which make them perfect for outdoor use. The pretty blue striped rug was a clearance find from Ballard Designs.
I added a couple of “Endless Summer” hydrangeas to the planters by my front door. They are blooming like crazy and I love them.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been as successful growing my own peonies, so I picked up this beautiful bouquet from a flower stand near my home. They are so pretty in a simple white pitcher.
You can see my porch style from last summer here.
And finally, here’s a peek at the side garden and gate to the left of the porch. We have a narrow side yard, and the path leads to the back garden. It was a former wasteland and dumping ground, but I gave it a little love and attention this spring. The garden is always a work in progress!
Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July holiday!
Susan

Your porch is just lovely. It has very “southern” roots to it. Who would have thought to bring something from the south to Seattle…lol. I’ve spent just a small amount of time in Seattle and what a lovely place it is. I’ve also spent time at Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island and absolutely fell in love with this area. Wa. Is such a beautiful state. I have several relatives living there and have visited many times.
Your home is absolutely gorgeous! It has perfect southern roots mixed nicely with the ocean theme. I love your light colors and wood blends but mostly I love the way you have added your “blues” into the mix. Everything gives such a relaxing and welcoming feel.

Hi Shirley! I was definitely inspired by southern porches, especially the “haint blue” porch ceilings. Oak Harbor is just beautiful, isn’t it? Thank you so much for your kind words about my home, it means so much to me.

Susan, I absolutely adore your porch and side garden. What a polished yet relaxing feel you have accomplished. We are deep in the heat here in south central Texas so we’ll have a very laid back weekend. I hope you enjoy yours!
Susan says
Thank you, Janelle! I haven’t been to Texas in many years, but I remember the Texas heat for sure. I hope you had a wonderful July 4th!

I look forward to your posts so much. The decor is inviting, cozy, and relaxing. Love the beige, blue and white tones with pops of color.
Thank you for suggesting white down in an earlier post. I had sampled so many shades and that was perfect for look I wanted to achieve.

Your porch is lovely and so serene and peaceful looking. I’m curious about your hydrangea’s. Do you plant them after summer, or what do you do with them? They are beautiful!
Susan says
Thank you, Colleen. I do plant some of my hydrangeas in the garden at the end of summer. I also leave some over the winter in containers, also. I just prune them in the spring and they seem to be quite happy. The pink hydrangea in the white planter was actually in another container in my back yard. I transplanted it this spring and it seems happy as a clam on my porch.

Aaah! How lovely to see you back and with two posts! Office is charming, porch a delight. Over here, porch is very different. It’s just a shelter really tacked onto a house, but I always delight in the idea of an “ouside room”. So we have an area just outside the kitchen and dining room which has seating and a table which, during our lockdown we have nearly lived in, due to some extraordinarily lovely weather. We had a wet winter – but not a cold one, and then a dry bright spell in February. I didn’t know it then, but it was exactly the right conditions for my day lilies (hemerocallis) which are all huge this year, and flowering their hearts out. Sadly, hydrangeas don’t do well in this garden, but I do have one, palest pink with a darker pink edge to the petals – but even after 12-15 years, still only gives me around eight flower heads a year, bless it!
Susan – lovely to see you back. Stay safe.
Susan says
Hi Susan! I am so happy you have enjoyed my last two posts. Outdoor spaces really are a blessing during this lockdown, no matter how small they are. Oh how sweet that your hydrangea gives you those few blooms every season. Isn’t it funny how plants can thrive in one space and struggle in another, even in the same garden? I’ve had hydrangeas that barely survived in my front garden and were happy as clams in the back. Thanks so much for your kind comments!

Thank you, Sarah! Yes, the table was a lucky find! I can’t wait to get back to thrifting soon.
